The Crossing of the Thirteen Peaks

The Traversata delle Tredici Cime represents one of the most extraordinary experiences one can have in the mountains of Alta Valtellina. Starting from the Gavia Pass (or in the opposite direction from the Forni), you tackle a long ride of more than ten peaks above 3500 m, including Tresero, San Matteo, Vioz and Cevedale, faithfully following the ridge lines. The route, which began as a classic mountaineering route, is now a combination of elemental rocky ridges, snowy sections up to 45°, and glacial traverses that provide continuous and spectacular views of the Ortles-Cevedale massif.

In addition to its scenic appeal, the traverse holds a strong historical memory: along the way you will encounter remnants of Italian and Austrian barracks of the Great War, trenches and emplacements that testify to extreme life at high altitude during the 1915-18 conflict.

The route can be divided into 2 or 3 days, taking advantage of the many support points: the Berni, Forni, and Vioz-Mantova shelters, but also the Seveso, Meneghello, and Colombo bivouacs, which offer spartan but suggestive solutions. From a technical point of view, the difficulties do not exceed grade II, except for two key passages: the paretina under the Rocca di Santa Caterina (equipped with chain) and the descent from Punta Taviela, which is more treacherous, especially in late season.

The fatigue, hours of walking and high altitude make this traverse a true mountaineering adventure, suitable for those seeking not only the conquest of peaks but above all a total immersion in the nature and history of the Alps.
