Dopo numerosi giorni il Sentiero Italia torna a quote di pianura presso la città di Tirano con questa tappa lunga, di dislivello in salita intermedio e dislivello notevole in discesa. Da Prato Valentino si segue il tracciato delle piste sciistiche verso monte dirigendosi poi ad arco verso il Monte Cancano a 2435 metri di quota. Dopo un tratto che costeggia il confine con la Svizzera dalla Borgata di Lughina il percorso prende a scendere con decisione seguendo alcuni tratti di strada carrozzabile fino a Tirano, capolinea italiano della famosa Ferrovia del Bernina che collega la Valtellina con Sankt Moritz.
