Excursion to the Sforzellina Glacier - Flora and Landscapes of a Changing World
The excursion begins at the parking lot near the Berni Refuge (2,540 m) in the Gavia Valley. From here, follow the signs for the educational nature trail that leads to the glacier. The route starts with a short descent to the stream, which is crossed on a small bridge, passes by the former Gavia Refuge and continues along a military mule track from World War I in the direction of the Sforzellina.
The itinerary unfolds in one of the most beautiful glacial valleys of the Park. Here, the landscapes have been shaped by the slow and lengthy work of ancient glaciers. The high-altitude vegetation, which has had to adapt to the extreme conditions present here, is also of great interest.
Upon reaching a small lake (2,775 m), we continue on easy tracks until we reach the front of the glacier (2,800 m). This is one of the most studied in the protected area; today it is largely covered by debris, attesting to the rapid changes it is undergoing due to climate warming.
The return is along the same route as the ascent.
