Excursion to Bivacco Battaglione Skiatori Monte Ortles - a high-altitude shelter of the First World War
The route that leads to Bivacco Battaglione Skiatori Monte Ortles is a demanding yet suggestive excursion, suitable for expert hikers. Starting from Rifugio Berni in Gavia Valley (2.541m), follow the trail that crosses the Gavia stream and climbs up the left bank of Dosegù Valley. The trail continues past several glacial lakes at around 2.800m until it reaches the bivouac at 3.130m, on the border with Trentino.
The itinerary offers spectacular views of the Dosegù Valley, the glaciers and the surrounding peaks.
Along the route, you can see the remains of fortifications and trenches dating back to the First World War, which are historical evidence of great value. You will return along the same path to reach your vehicles, bringing the day to a close.
