ArcheoAlps Excursion: ArcheoAlps Excursion: The Edelweiss Cave - Shepherds' evidence and Mesolithic artefacts
From Ponte dell'Alpe (2.286 m) we will take the path on the left bank of the Alpe stream to reach the Edelweiss Cave (2.510 m). This is one of the few caves in the Park, inside which were found some carvings attributed to shepherds who used to rest here during the transhumance of cattle. In addition to these testimonies, remains of tools dating back to about 9,000 years ago have also been found.
On some occasions, it is possible during the visit to witness a team of archeological researchers at work, offering a unique chance to observe from up close the excavation and documentation activities aimed at uncovering the most ancient traces of anthropic presence in this area.
From the cave we will continue over the trail that leads to the charming Ponte di Pietra, then gradually descend towards the Alpe Pass, situated at 2.461 meters of altitude. At this point we will head back to the highway close to the parking.
The entire route develops in the alpine prairie, characteristic environment of these heights, with beautiful outcrops of veined marble along the stream.
