Excursion along Pedemontana of Bormio - A day as a researcher: the return of the wolf and trophic waterfalls
Easy loop hike above the centre of Bormio. The excursion starts in Piazza Cavour (known as Piazza del Kuerc: 1,215 m) to reach the “Rezia” Alpine Botanical Garden. From here you reach the Pedemontana, a dirt road closed to traffic that leads to a sunny picnic area (1,525 m).
From here the road climbs further up to an altitude of 1,565 m and then descends and returns to Bormio, passing through the villages of Pramezzano and Gesa Rota, overlooking the centre of Bormio, now just a few minutes' walk away.
The trail leads through beautiful larch woods, which, according to one interpretation, gave its name to the mountain above, La Reit. This name would, in fact, derive from “Laricetum”. The larch is interspersed with mountain pine, scots pine and some spruce.
Along the way, the view opens up, here and there, over the Bormio plain and Valfurva. In the forest it is possible to spot, or at least hear, typical forest species. Woodpeckers of various species, passerines, hazelnuts and squirrels are common presences in the area.
Despite the relatively low altitude and proximity to the town, this area is very popular with deer and, although rarer, roe deer. A suitable environment and natural predators have allowed the elusive return of the wolf. During the excursion you will meet the researchers who are monitoring its presence in the Park and its interactions with other environmental components, a unique opportunity to enter into the life of the research.
