Church of the Holy Crucifix (or of St Anthony Abbot)
The Church of the Holy Crucifix (or of St Anthony Abbot) was built in 1368 and boasts a remarkable quantity and quality of frescoes.
Its name is in honour of the crucifix that the people of Bormio used to carry along the streets of the village on the first Monday of June each year (a cult dating back to the 14th century). The small sanctuary is characterised by the remarkable quality of the frescoes preserved in it, even though the architectural layout has been remodelled several times over the centuries. Among the oldest representations are the Flagellation of Christ (dated 1368), the Coronation of Thorns and The Crucifix.
Today, the church is best known for the blessing of animals that takes place in the churchyard on 17 January each year, on the feast day of St Anthony Abbot.
