If the Stelvio is the king, Cancano is surely a princess.
The road was part of the Via Imperiale d'Alemagna a Medieval trade route which trasported wine to the central Europe in exchange for salt. It was later adapted for the costruction of the Cancano reservoir.
This is a climb with the little or no shade, surronded by the mountain pines, the invigorating of which helps to alleviate the fatigue involved.
Once arrived at the Fraele Towers, the view of the twist ad turns of the road is particularly striking.
In 2004 this was the finish line of a stage of the Giro d'Italia.
Several hiking trails start from the Cancano Lakes area.
