Bernina Pass

At 2,330 metres above sea level, the Bernina Pass is one of the most spectacular crossings in the Rhaetian Alps, linking Valtellina directly with the Upper Engadin in Switzerland. It takes its name from the majestic Piz Bernina, the highest peak in the Eastern Alps, which rises just a short distance away. The wide, impeccably maintained road offers a breathtaking journey through snow-capped peaks, shimmering glaciers and ever-changing mountain views. From the pass’s scenic viewpoint, visitors can admire the Pizzo Palù, Bellavista and Bernina glaciers – a magnet for travellers and mountain lovers from all over the world. The highest point reachable by road along this route, it also marks a cultural divide: Italian is spoken up to the pass, while beyond it the local language is Romansh. Remote and without major settlements nearby, the Bernina Pass is perfect for a day trip by car or motorbike, and serves as the natural gateway from Sondrio or Valtellina to the renowned resort of St. Moritz, surrounded by the splendour of the Swiss Alps.
