ArcheoAlps excursion: Beneath the Tresero glacier: Europe’s highest petroglyphs
The excursion begins from the parking area at Rifugio Berni (2.540m) in the Gavia Valley. From here, you climb through the Dosegù Valley, a barren area rarely visited by hikers where a sense of wilderness dominates.
Once you reach an altitude of 3.000m, at the foot of Punta del Segnale, we will discover Europe’s highest petroglyphs dating back to the Bronze Age. What really makes these historical artefacts so unique is not only their ancient date: they constitute a new piece in the history of the relationship between man and the mountains. It is surprising that people visited such inhospitable places at that time.
These depictions of men, animals, and spirals go beyond history: they have emerged in our present due to the retreat of the glacier, a consequence of climatic change. For enthusiasts of archeology and anthropic development in the alpine environment, this excursion represents a unique and exciting occasion to follow the traces of history.
