Sergio (Romano Rizzato)
Born in Milan on 21 August 1936, he lived and worked alternately between Milan and Tuscany. In the early 1950s, he attended evening courses in life drawing at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. These are years in which he will tour museums and cathedrals to learn about ancient and recent Italian and European art, which will be the other side of the study of a non-objective language that will lead to abstract painting. These were also years in which he collaborated with the team of the Piccolo Teatro in Milan, under the guidance of Ezio Frigerio, in the preparation of prose and opera performances at the Piccola Scala. Following several trips abroad, he visited museums in Berne, Basel, Stuttgart, Amsterdam, The Hague and Paris, always following his cultural interest in European modern art. In the publishing field, he experiments with and applies different techniques for illustration in order to respond to editorial requests ranging from medical-scientific to literary, fairy-tale, zoological, botanical, historical-anthropological related to the archaeological reconstruction of historical periods.
He has worked for major Italian publishers such as Garzanti, Fabbri, Mondadori, UTET and foreign publishers. Attracted by the English publishing tradition in the field of children's illustration, he stayed in England where he worked for Weidenfeld & Nicols, Macdonald Book, Dorling Kindersley and Peter Lowe. He exhibited at the Children's Literature Centre in Florence and in Bologna for the Children's Book Fair. He currently collaborates with the InkLink studio in Florence on archaeological reconstructions for the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.
