Hiking in the Protected Areas Around Bormio

Protection and conservation. Did you know that 65% of the Bormio region is protected? Are you ready to take a walk in the vast Stelvio National Park and experience some magical moments?

Walking in the Stelvio National Park and the sites of local importance will be one of the highlights of your holiday in Bormio, for at least two reasons.

An area is protected because of its ecosystems and biodiversity that are worthy of protection

The leading reason for choosing Bormio for your Alpine holiday is the fact that the town is surrounded by conservation areas.
In these areas, you will come face-to-face with natural wonders of national and international importance, such as the Forni glacier, the star of the glaciological trail. Or an area such as the Valle del Braulio, notable for its interesting and picturesque geomorphological features, which can be seen from the Campo dei Fiori path.

You may also come across some very rare species of flowers, such as the Greek Valerian (also known as Jacob’s Ladder) or the Lady’s Slipper orchid. Or you might be lucky enough to spot some of the large birds of prey which have returned to nest in the Alps, after having almost completely disappeared.

A protected area means it is safeguarded against human development and pollution.

But being surrounded by the Stelvio National Park and locally important sites means that, in just a few minutes on foot or by car, you can find yourself in a wild, natural landscape. In summer, spring or autumn, the hiking routes are spectacular!

Man-made developments in the park are subject to significant restrictions. You will love wandering along ancient drove roads and military tracks across the mountains with no vehicles around. The Val Viola, Val Zebrù, Valle dei Forni, Valle di Fraele and Val di Rezzalo valleys are ideal for these sort of walks..

Any place is more special if you get there on foot

And walking in the national park allows you to get a close-up view of these precious habitats. In the conservation areas, you can choose a route to suit you, whether for a gentle stroll or a long, demanding hike.
All of the paths will leave you with precious memories and, with a bit of luck, some thrilling encounters with nature.
