History and culture in the heart of the Alps
Bormio and the Alta Valtellina, thanks to their strategic position in the heart of the Alps, while maintaining a certain degree of autonomy and democracy, have suffered for centuries, the influence of various European powers, such as Milan, the French, the Grisons, the Spanish, and the Austrians. This has contributed to surprising cultural development, with a lively historic center rich in palaces, towers, churches, and civil buildings that have developed over time with very different styles and characteristics. There are also many nice and historical farm houses scattered in the valleys.
Among museums and ancient traditions
There are several museums in Bormio and the neighboring towns in the Alta Valtellina, and they are a continuous surprise for the quality of their collections, which are rich and varied, and that, in non trivial manner, help to preserve the history, the culture, and the nature of the magnificent land.
These museums include the Civic Museum and the Mineralogical Museum in Bormio, the Valley Museum and Visitor Center Baita of the Park in Valfurva, the Forte Oga Museum, and the 2758 meter high Donegani Museum at the Stelvio Pass.
The ancient traditions, such as Pasquali or the Carneval of Mat, have been handed down from father to son for hundreds of years, and are still a source of pride for the population. With strong local participation—even by the children—in these traditional events the community shows its desire to share its history with outsiders, inviting all to participate and enjoy the festivities.
A cultural offering for all
Conferences, naturalistic evenings, concerts, and also games and workshops for the little ones, are only a small part of cultural activities offered in the Alta Valtellina as it seeks to preserve its culture, while keeping an eye on new technologies and innovations.
