The ski run Deborah Compagnoni – tribute to a great champion

The ski descent Deborah Compagnoni is dedicated to this Olympic champion who was born and grew up in S. Caterina Valfurva. The ski run is definitely one of the most fun and interesting in the alpine arc, and thanks to its exposure to the north, has the distinctive quality of always having very solid, hard, and long lasting snow.

Created specially for the Alpine World Championships of 2005, when all the women’s races were held in S. Caterina Valfurva, while the men’s events took place on the Stelvio ski run in Bormio. At the start, it enters a narrow path between the rocks and then enters the woods until it arrives in town. The whole forested section includes some fun walls and some challenging sections. The final part, which is wider and descends directly into the village to reach the new gondola terminal, S.Caterina – Plaghera – Vallalpe. The run is equipped with a modern lighting system, so it can provide for excitement on the snow even during the night skiing.

The Valtellina Nordic track

The Valtellina Nordic ski track, often used for national and international races, winds through the woods of the Stelvio National Park, is characterized by racing tracks of 3.1 miles (5 km) and 6.2 miles (10 km), with a continuous ups and downs and elevation differences of between 623 feet (190 meters) and 1279 feet (390 meters). Many technical solutions have been added to accommodate everyone, but in any case it is certainly worth a try, and presents a challenging descent especially appreciated by more expert cross-country skiers. Beside the racing track, and in part coinciding with it, is the tourist track with loops of 2, 3 and 5 km. Thanks to the constant maintenance and to the climate of S. Caterina, the Nordic ski tracks remains in perfect condition until late winter.

Santa Caterina Valfurva will be hosting three spectacular races on the Deborah Compagnoni slope from December 27th to 29th!
