Livigno, the little Tibet
Livigno is a municipality in the Valtellina that spans 7.5 miles (12 km) in a charming valley at 5958 feet (1816 meters) above sea level. Located on the Swiss border, reachable both from the Forcola Pass (open only in summer) and from the Munt la Schera Tunnel (all year), Livigno is a summer and winter tourist destination that offers lovers of sports and open air a mountain environment rich in forests and pastures, where one can practice every kind of activity. Livigno’s most popular activities include skiing—in all its varieties—and snowshoeing in the winter, while hiking, mountain biking, and road cycling are the summer favorites.
Livigno is also known as extra-customs area and therefore enjoys special tax treatment. It is therefore possible to buy, at a favorable prices, a series of goods listed in appropriate tables. Duty free goods can be purchased in limited quantities, while for all other goods there is a fixed maximum amount, above which the purchase must be declared to the customs officers at the Foscagno Pass or the Swiss Customs.
