Along the trails of the Alta Valtellina on the tracks of Marco De Gasperi
Bormio and the Alta Valtellina, in the heart of the Ortles Cevedale group of mountains, are a dream for lovers of mountain running. Starting from 4019 (1225 meters), you can reach the highest peaks, even as high as 9842 feet (3000 meters). To run along the trails of the Stelvio National Park, through woods and pastures, along rivers and lakes, and sometimes encountering the perpetual snow, is a unique experience. Ask Marco De Gasperi, who is the European champion, Italian, and above all the 6 times world champion of mountain running. And it was precisely in this valley, in Bormio, that he started to train and to win.
Sky Race Alta Valtellina, ASD Valtellina Wine Trail and Trophy Kima
The Alta Valtellina is famous in the world of mountain running for several races and events among which are the following:
The Sky Race Alta Valtellina – Val Viola usually takes place in June in Valdidentro. Departing and arriving in Arnoga, it covers a course of about 20 Km, with a height difference of less than 1000 meters, primarily within the beautiful valley of Val Viola.
The ASD Valtellina Wine Trail, which takes place in October, is unique within races of mountain running: its path branches off to different wineries, between vineyards and terraces, and within ancient and mysterious dwellings such as the Castel Grumello and the Tower “de li beli miri” of Teglio. Usually, there are two courses: the marathon with departure from Tirano and the half marathon with departure from Chiuro, both with arrival in the heart of Sondrio, in piazza Garibaldi.
And finally, the absolute queen among the mountain races is the Kima Trophy, run in Val Masino. With its 32.3 miles (52 km) and more than 27559 feet (8400 meters) of climbing, it is one of the most demanding competitions in the panorama of the sky running world; in the last two editions, it has seen the participation of the best athletes of this specialty, including Kilian Jornet.
