The Climb of the Pirate

Bormio – Mazzo – Mortirolo Pass

These names may mean little to some, but to Italian and international cyclists, this is a true event. The climb is arduous, and tests even the most accomplished cyclist’s endurance. Over the last thirty years, it has been a “theatre” of serious races and cycling duels to the bitter end. Baptised the Pirate’s climb, after Marco Pantani, it leads up to a sculpture that commemorates his untimely passing. The trail is almost exclusively through the woods, but is positively one-of-a-kind.

Length 42,26 km – Difficult – Altitude at arrival 1860 m. – Uphill height difference: 1437 m. –average slope 10,5% – maximum slope 18%

The Panoramic Climb

Bormio – Grosio – Mortirolo Pass

The easiest slope (but not entirely a breeze) to reach Mortirolo Pass. It offers an extraordinary panorama, with typical Alpine mountain-scapes, fields, and characteristic baite chalets. It lives in the shadow of other better known routes but at any rate it offers a challenging alternative to those for whom Mortirolo is too difficult. Over the last three kilometers, the road winds just above the legendary trail.

Lenght 35,63 km – Difficult – Altitude at arrival 1860 m. – Uphill height difference: 1267 m. –average slope 1,8% – maximum slope 12%
