| YOUR HOLIDAY STARTS FROM HERE

Bormio and the Alta Valtellina are the ideal place for those who love cycling and are in search of breathtaking climbs. Mythical roads, immersed in the spectacular nature of the Central Alps, sometimes seemingly impassable and quite tiring, but it’s always fascinating to be in the same theater, frequented over the years by many stages of the Giro d’Italia. There are many cyclists who dream to replicate these professional feats, and to challenge themselves during the summer, with these legendary passes.

The roads to Lake Cancano and to Bormio 2000

In addition to the more famous climbs of the Stelvio Pass, Gavia Pass, and Mortirolo Pass, the Alta Valtellina offers many other cycling itineraries, of different levels of difficulty, suitable for everyone, from those just starting out, to amateur enthusiasts, to professionals.

Among others, we recommend the ascent to Lake Cancano and the climb up to Bormio 2000, as both are ideal for training the legs before tackling the more challenging climbs.

The Via Imperiale—the ancient trade road a part of which goes from Bormio to Lake Cancano—is accessed from Valdidentro at Pedenosso-Fior d Alpe Turripiano and climbs to  the Towers of Fraele. With a length of 8.8 miles (14.27 km) and 2601 feet (793 meters) of climbing, it has an average grade of 5.2%.

The “Magnificent Land” is the climb from Bormio to Bormio 2000. At 6.28 miles (10.12 km) long, and with 2398 feet (731 meters) of climbing, it has an average grade of 7.2%, and is characterized by wide hairpin turns that wind through a beautiful woods. From Bormio 2000 the views of the Magnificent Land are exciting and postcard-like.

Three rides not to be missed: Gavia, Mortirolo and Stelvio

As each of these legendary summits are passes, hence reachable from two side, each of our three rides not to be missed can be ridden from either of two starting points:

  • Gavia Pass: “The Madonna of the peaks” (Bormio – Gavia Pass) and “The Epic Climb” (Ponte di Legno – Gavia Pass).
  • Mortirolo Pass: “The climb of the Pirate”, Marco Pantani (Bormio – Mazzo di Valtellina – Mortirolo Pass) and ”The Panoramic Climb” (Bormio – Grosio – Mortirolo Pass).
  • Stelvio Pass: “The Cima Coppi” (Bormio – Stelvio Pass) and “His Majesty the Ortler” (Prato allo Stelvio – Stelvio Pass).
