Discovering the churches of Bormio - Guided tour to the Church of S. Ignazio by the "Volunteers for the culture"
The church is one of the most remarkable works in the ancient village of Bormio, especially because of the beauty of its interior decorations.
The church, in Baroque style, has two side altars, but it is the high altar that draws attention: on it are two splendid paintings by Giambattista Muttoni, a pupil of the great Jesuit painter Andrea Pozzo, depicting the Death of St Ignatius and the Presentation of the Rules of the Society of Jesus to His Holiness the Pope. Muttoni is also the author of the frescoes in the imposing dome, painted with the trompe l'oeil technique and depicting the Descent of the Holy Spirit and some scenes from the life of the Jesuits. The lower part, on the other hand, was painted by Giacomo Lecchi and Eugenio Ricci. Finally, it is worth mentioning that under the presbytery of the church, although closed to the public but still of great charm, are the tombs of the Fathers and Brothers of the Jesuit College.
